DESPERATE CALL for VOLUNTEERS for JOBURG GEN HOSPITAL!!!! PDF Print E-mail
Information

Please see the request below from Dr. Michelle Kock @ JHB Gen Hospital calling desperately for help:

Hi, we are having a crisis in our wards at Joburg Gen Hospital. Last night there were only 2 junior nurses to run our 2 paeds wards, paeds surgical ward and our prem unit. We are sending out a desperate call for anyone who would be willing to volunteer to help clean and feed babies. Also looking for any qualified nurses to help give out medications. It seems the situation is unpredictable as some days all the staff arrive and others, like last night, no-one comes to work.

I have spoken to our head of department Prof Cooper and currently there is no specific system in place for volunteers. He says they can just arrive at the wards. Ward 285, 287, 177, 277.

The address of the Hospital is:- No.17 Jubilee Road, Parktown

Anyone who could find the time to help the overburdened doctors at Joburg Gen would earn their eternal gratitude!

Thanks and GOD bless!

The Cake Club
the_cake_club__logo_small.jpg

As South Africans we are bombarded with a number of messages on a daily basis; “Save Energy”, “Protect yourself against HIV” and “Organisation X needs your assistance”. As we all know, hearing the same messages on a consistent basis makes one deaf to them.

Having recently read about a home for abandoned, neglected and HIV positive children, run by two incredible ladies who give so selflessly of themselves, I embarked on a mission to raise awareness (and hopefully funds) for them. I emailed everyone I know with a request to purchase a ticket for their auction dinner. I was devastated when not one person replied. This made me think about why not and I realised that the reasons are many but the most significant is the ‘hearing loss’ we have developed to the needs of others as the need is simply too great and people think that the small amount of help they could offer simply couldn’t make any difference at all.

I wanted to come up with a fresh approach to ‘fundraising’ – one which would allow people to give of themselves in a novel way. The result, “The Cake Club”.

I would like to appeal to anyone who would be able to donate something once a month to be sold at a cake sale in aid of charity. The idea is to decide on one charity/ cause for each cake sale and raise funds to support it. I am currently drawing up a list of possible venues and welcome any suggestions in this regard.

Volunteers to sell at each event would also be so appreciated as well as any businesses who would be willing to sponsor t-shirts for “The Cake Club”.

Please contact me if you would be interested in getting involved in this initiative – life just passes us by and each moment presents a new opportunity to help those in need.

FERAL CATS AND KITTENS IN PAULSHOF AND SUNNINGHILL NEED YOUR HELP!!! PDF Print E-mail
Information
Monday, 06 September 2010
Many people erroneously believe that cats can fend for themselves. Cat owners often abandon their cats when they move or simply no longer want the responsibility of pet ownership. Such cats survive only if they find food, shelter, and avoid dangers such as injury from cars, dogs, other cats, or abusive humans. The killing of feral cats does not control their population because other cats come in to take their place. However, if a colony has a stable population of neutered cats, these cats stay and no more cats come in.

We are appealing to the public to please help with any donations of food/shelter and more importantly Sterilization, or to volunteer some of their time to feed the many Feral cats and kittens living in Centers/Veld/Rivers. We are in the process of feeding and 'trapping and sterilizing' in order to minimize the diseases and breeding of these Ferals.

Please contact me if you are in the area/and/or willing to help at all - Jessica 072 133 5531

APPEAL TO RESIDENTS ON GREEN BELT PDF Print E-mail
Environmental
Monday, 23 August 2010
Residents – particularly those living along the green belt areas – are urged to ensure that they, as well as their gardeners do not dump anything into the green belt areas.

We have a problem in that from time-to-time tree cuttings, other garden refuse and even building rubble is dumped in our green belt areas.  Not only does this detract from our lovely park areas, but it hampers City Parks’ staff or contractors when they come in to cut the grass and it simply creates another problem for those of us who voluntarily take on the responsibility of trying to keep our green belt areas clean and attractive.

We would like to encourage members of the community who regularly walk in the green belt areas to photograph and/or report instances of dumping and to send these to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

A big thank you to those residents who have taken it upon themselves to beautify the green belt area outside their property. Dumping never occurs in these areas, so if we can encourage all residents with properties next to the green belt areas to take on this responsibility, we’ll not only solve the dumping problem, but also solve the grass cutting problem!
